Tips on Kids Beginning Guitar

What size guitar to buy your kids?

The significance of choosing the correct size guitar for a beginner is extremely vital, especially when choosing for a child under the age of ten. It is important that the guitar not be too large for your child.  Poor size selection can lead to frustration with lessons, slow progress, and even the development of poor technique. On the other hand, they grow so fast that you don't want to get one they will outgrow in a couple of months...
Many guitar makers build ½ and ¾ sized guitars (about 30" and 34-39" respectively). As a rough guide, ¾ sized guitars are good for 6-10 year olds, and ½ sized guitars are good for 3-5 year olds. Note, there is a sizeable difference between a 34" and 39" 3/4-size guitar, with the former suitable for ages 5-8 and the latter for ages 6-10.
Size Chart
Height of Player                        Size of Guitar

I Don't Know Anything About Guitars But My Kids Want to Play ... What do I do????

It would be great to pick up the guitar and master it in 5 minutes.  But like anything,  you have to learn basics to make it fun.

Suggestion #1 - Learn to Play with your child or children.

Suggestion #2 - Purchase a beginners book with a DVD that has up-to-date songs to learn. Also, buy a song book by the child’s favorite singer or band . This gives them incentive to work towards playing something they really like. The DVD will exercise multisensory and reinforce what they learn in the book visually.

Suggestion #3- Learn the Chords G, C , D & A . These are basic guitar chords. There are many songs that can be played using only these chords.

Suggestion #4 - If the child can’t make a clear sound out of the guitar, make sure their thumb is not hanging above the neck.  The tip of the thumb should be the pressure point on the back of the guitar neck. Also, when they make a chord, be sure their fingers are more toward the center of the fret as possible.

Rule #1- Never, ever, ever put the child down for sounding bad. Yes, it might sound off but practice will take care of that. Playing is muscle memory.  After a week of playing 4 basic chords every day they should start to sound better.

Rule #2-Parental Approval is VERY important. Ask your child to play for you, even for only 5 minutes at a time. Always tell them positive comments. i.e. "You're improving every day!!" or "That sounds great !!"
